Other carte grise procedures 2026: divorce, leasing, corrections and plate theft

Does your case not match change of ownership, a duplicate or an import? The other procedures hub covers less common but essential formalities: divorce or death, leasing, company name change, error correction or technical modification, plate cloning, and some driving-licence requests. This 2026 guide points you to the right path and to the site’s online services.

When to use “other procedures”?
Whenever the reason is not a standard sale, a simple move, a duplicate or a classic import / collection file. The other procedures hub is the entry point: each situation has its own documents and, often, reduced taxes when conditions are met.
Flagship procedures reminder
- Change of ownership — French used purchase
- Change of address — keeper move
- Duplicate — loss, theft, damage
- Foreign vehicle — first French registration
- Classic registration / used + classic
Divorce or death: putting the carte grise in your name
Divorce — if you are a co-keeper and the judgment awards you the vehicle, title taxes may drop to €2.76 (+ €40 agency fee). Without co-ownership, the file is treated as a classic transfer (full carte grise + typical €30 agency fee).
Death — to keep the vehicle (e.g. community of property), prepare the death certificate, family record book (matrimonial regime), ID, licence, address and insurance. To sell within 3 months, the buyer can often receive the death certificate + family book; later, transfer the title into your name first (often €2.76 + €40 agency fee in the covered case), then sell via transfer declaration.
Leasing: change of address for the lessee
In leasing / LLD / LOA, the registered keeper is often the finance company. For a lessee address change, you need a mandate from the lessor. Do not attempt a plain change of address without it: start via other procedures or the contact form.
Business: company name change
If the legal name changes, a recent Kbis lets you update the carte grise without treating a sale. Also useful alongside French pro flows (W garage, professional purchase declaration).
Error correction and technical modification
- Material error (spelling, model, VIN, seats) — provide proof justifying the correction.
- Technical modification (restrictor / derestrict, seats, ethanol, etc.) — attestation from the approved professional who did the work.
These cases go through other procedures; for an unreadable or lost title, use a duplicate instead.
Cloned / usurped plates
Fines or police stops that are not yours? After proving the plate is cloned, a request for a new registration number can be filed. Do not confuse this with a simple duplicate (same number). Describe the case via other procedures / contact.
Driving licence
Office Carte Grise can also help with some licence formalities: first issue, duplicate (loss / theft / damage), new title after suspension, renewal at expiry, exchange of a foreign licence. Details are on other procedures.

Common pitfalls
- Treating divorce as a sale when you are already co-keeper (unnecessary cost).
- Selling too late after a death (> 3 months) without transferring the title first.
- Changing a leasing address without the lessor’s mandate.
- Requesting a duplicate for plate cloning (you often need a new number).
- Changing a technical feature without a professional attestation.

What proof for a name correction?
An ID document or civil-status record that matches, depending on the error.

They are separate titles, grouped on other procedures for easier orientation.
Where can I simulate a “classic” carte grise price?
Via the registration cost calculator and tax calculator.
