Everything you need to know about declaring a vehicle sale

Where can you file the declaration?

You can file this declaration on our website, directly on the government ANTS website, or through an authorised automotive professional.

The seller's obligation when transferring a vehicle

When a vehicle already registered in France changes hands, the former owner must notify the Ministry of the Interior within 15 days, providing the identity and address given by the new buyer.

Before the sale

  • Transfer certificate (Cerfa form 15776): to be completed in 2 copies
  • Vehicle administrative status certificate less than 15 days old (available at histovec.interieur.gouv.fr)
  • Roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) less than 6 months old

At the moment of the sale

The seller hands the buyer the 3 documents listed above together with the COMPLETE carte grise, crossed out with the words VENDU LE … (sold on), showing THE DATE AND TIME of the sale, and signed.

Recording the exact time of the sale protects the former owner from liability for any offences the new buyer might commit on the very day of the transfer.

Within 15 days after the sale

  • Declare the sale on our website using the « Sale declaration » procedure
  • Or declare it directly on the ANTS website
  • Or go through an authorised automotive professional

Documents to send us

  • The transfer certificate completed and signed by all parties (including any co-owners)
  • A copy of your photo ID
  • A completed and signed authorisation mandate (Cerfa form 13757*03)
  • A copy of the crossed-out carte grise

If there is a co-owner

  • The co-owner's photo ID

At the end of the procedure, you receive:

Service fee: €15 incl. VAT.
