Change of vehicle ownership in France (used vehicle)

When you buy a used vehicle already registered in France, the registration certificate (carte grise) must be put in your name. The new owner (and any co-owner) completes this online — on the government ANTS website, through a service like officecartegrise.fr, or via an authorised automotive professional.

Deadline to keep in mind

The buyer has one month from the date of purchase to apply for the transfer of the registration certificate (carte grise) into their name.

Document checklist

  • Valid photo ID (passport, national ID card or residence permit)
  • Valid driving licence
  • Proof of address less than 6 months old
  • Valid certificate of insurance
  • Registration certificate application (Cerfa form 13750*05) (Download CERFA form 13750*05)
  • Authorisation mandate (Cerfa form 13757*03) (Download CERFA form 13757*03)
  • The old carte grise, crossed out and marked « Vendu le » or « Cédé le » by the seller
  • Proof of a roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) less than 6 months old, if applicable

If you bought from a professional dealer

  • A signed accommodation certificate from your host
  • Your host's proof of address

If there is a co-owner

  • The co-owner's photo ID

If the vehicle is registered to a company

  • Kbis extract (French company registration certificate)

At the end of the procedure, you receive:

Your new carte grise is delivered by secure post, usually within 4 to 7 business days.

Keep the old carte grise for 5 years, then destroy it.
