Changing the address on your French registration certificate

When you move house in France, you have 1 month to update the address on your registration certificate (carte grise). The procedure differs depending on your vehicle's registration number format — either AB-123-CD or the older 123 AB 01 style.

• If your registration number is in the old 123 AB 01 format: you will receive a new registration certificate with a brand-new number in the current SIV format. You will then need to change your number plates and inform your insurer of the change.
• If your registration number is in the AB-123-CD format: you will receive a self-adhesive label to stick on your current registration certificate, over the dotted lines around your previous address.

  On the 4th change of address, you receive a completely new registration certificate.

  If the police stop you and you haven't declared your change of address within the one-month deadline, you risk a fine of up to €750 (in practice, usually a fixed fine of €135).

  The application can be made on the ANTS website or through a service accredited by the French state.

Here is the list of documents needed for the application:
– The registration certificate,
– Valid proof of identity for the holder (and the co-holder, if there is one),
– Proof of your new address less than 6 months old,
– The mandate form (cerfa 13757*03) if you go through an accredited service,
– The registration certificate application form (cerfa 13750*05).

Once your application has been validated and paid, you will receive your label or your new registration certificate by post within 5 to 7 working days.
