Change of address on your carte grise 2026: deadline, sticker and documents after moving

Change of address on your carte grise 2026: deadline, sticker and documents after moving

Just moved house in France? The law requires you to update the address on your registration certificate (carte grise) within one month. This 2026 guide explains the difference between a sticker and a new title, SIV vs older FNI formats, the documents you need, the fine risk, leasing cases, and how to complete the procedure quickly online.

Ready to update your carte grise? Start the change of address online — €30 incl. VAT agency fee, no regional registration tax recalculation, upload documents after payment.

Why declare a change of address?

The address on the carte grise is used for roadside checks, title delivery and consistency with insurance and roadworthiness testing. An outdated address can lead to a fine (often a €135 fixed penalty, up to €750) and slows later procedures (duplicate, transfer, change of ownership).

Legal deadline: 1 month from the move. After that you are in breach even if the vehicle is correctly insured.

Do not confuse

Keep the old carte grise until you receive the sticker or new title. Place the sticker exactly on the dotted area around the previous address.

Documents required in 2026

  • carte grise (original / clear scan);
  • proof of identity of the keeper (ID card, passport or valid residence permit);
  • proof of address less than 6 months old at the new address (or that of the co-keeper whose address will appear on the title);
  • Cerfa no. 13750 — application for a registration certificate;
  • Cerfa no. 13757 — mandate, if you use an accredited professional.

Prepare Cerfa forms via Cerfa forms to print or the document generator, then upload them on the change of address page.

How much does it cost?

With Office Carte Grise only the service fee is charged: €30 incl. VAT. There is no recalculation of regional taxes for a simple address change. You usually receive the sticker or new carte grise by secure post within 4 to 7 working days after the file is validated.

5 steps to update your address

  1. Check you are still within the one-month deadline (or regularise as soon as possible).
  2. Gather carte grise, ID, proof of address and Cerfa forms.
  3. Order on change of address.
  4. Pay then upload your documents.
  5. Receive the sticker (to affix) or the new title; if you move from FNI to SIV, change the plates and inform your insurer.

Special cases

CaseWhat to do
Leasing / LOA / LLD vehicleThe keeper is often the lessor: you need a lessor mandate. Use other procedures or contact.
Co-keepersProof of address must match the address that will appear on the title.
Lost / unreadable titlePlan a duplicate (sometimes combined with the address update).
Selling right after movingUpdate the address first, then file the transfer; the buyer completes change of ownership.

Common pitfalls

  • Missing the one-month deadline — fine risk and slower later files.
  • Proof of address older than 6 months.
  • Forgetting the 4th change — no longer a sticker, a full new title.
  • FNI format — plates + insurance must be updated after the SIV title arrives.
  • Leasing without a mandate — file refused.
  • Confusing with change of ownership — different path and taxes.
