France road-user checklist 2026: gear and papers
Updated October 2026: before a long trip or a roadside check, being a “perfect road user” in France is no longer just about a yellow vest. In 2026 you must combine mandatory equipment, up-to-date papers (carte grise, insurance, roadworthiness test) and, in cities, the Crit’Air / low-emission zone (ZFE) sticker. Documents to keep on board in 2026
At a check, officers first verify that you can justify driving the vehicle.
- Driving licence valid for the vehicle category;
- Registration certificate (carte grise) or temporary registration certificate (CPI);
- Insurance certificate in force;
- Roadworthiness test (contrôle technique) if the vehicle is subject to it (often from 4 years);
- Crit’Air sticker displayed if you drive in a low-emission zone (ZFE).
Moved house? You have one month to update the address: change of address. Lost, stolen or damaged title: duplicate carte grise. Recent purchase: change of ownership within one month.

Mandatory on board
- High-visibility vest (CE marking), within easy reach;

Mountain law (1 November – 31 March)
In designated mountain départements, snow chains / socks or winter tyres are required. Plan ahead before crossing those areas.

A well-equipped car with the carte grise still in the seller’s name or an outdated address is still non-compliant. Start with change of ownership or change of address, then sort Crit’Air if needed.
Motorcycle and scooter: helmet, gloves and vest
- Approved helmet (ECE-06 or ECE-05), fastened, with 4 reflective elements — rider and passenger;
- CE-certified gloves — mandatory for rider and passenger;
- High-visibility vest — on you or in a storage compartment; put it on after an emergency stop on the carriageway.

Bicycles: what is really mandatory in 2026
Contrary to a common myth (and older articles), a helmet is not mandatory for adults.
- Helmet — mandatory for under-12s (rider or passenger), fastened, CE marking; recommended beyond that age;
- High-vis vest — mandatory at night (or in poor visibility) outside built-up areas;
- Lights and reflectors, front/rear brakes, audible warning (bell).

FAQ — perfect road user 2026
Is a breathalyser still mandatory in the car?
No. Carrying one has not been a legal obligation for several years. It remains recommended. Driving above the legal alcohol limits is still sanctioned.
Is a bicycle helmet mandatory for an adult in France?
No. A helmet is mandatory only for under-12s. For adults it is strongly recommended. A high-vis vest is mandatory at night outside built-up areas.
What if my carte grise is not up to date before a check?
