Recording a vehicle sale

Selling your vehicle? Declaring the transfer protects you from the buyer’s fines and traffic offences.

I sold my car in France — what is the deadline for declaring the sale?

As the seller, you must declare the sale (déclaration de cession) within 15 days of handing over the vehicle. This step protects you: once recorded, you are no longer liable for fines or offences committed by the buyer. Keep your copy of the signed Cerfa 15776 transfer certificate, note the exact date and time of the sale on the crossed-out carte grise, and declare the sale on our site, on the ANTS portal, or through an accredited professional.

What is Cerfa 15776 (certificate of sale)?

It is the official sale / transfer form for a vehicle. It must be completed and signed by seller and buyer (and co-owners when relevant), in several copies. It is used both by the buyer for the change of ownership and by the seller for the transfer declaration. An incomplete Cerfa is one of the most common reasons a file is rejected.

What is the transfer code (code de cession) for?

When the sale is recorded, a transfer code may be generated to help the buyer complete the change of ownership. Send it to the buyer promptly. If it is lost, registration without a code is still possible, but the file becomes more document-heavy.

What should I do with the carte grise when selling?

Cross out the carte grise, write “Sold on” or “Transferred on” with the date and time, sign it, and give it to the buyer with the certificate of sale. Keep a copy or photo of the crossed-out certificate and your Cerfa copy. Do not keep the original once the vehicle has been handed over: the buyer needs it to register.

What risks does a seller face if the sale is not declared?

Without a declaration, fines can keep arriving in your name, and you may be held liable for events after the sale. Declaring within 15 days is essential even if the buyer delays their own carte grise application.

Is declaring the sale free of charge?

The transfer declaration itself does not trigger the regional fiscal-horsepower tax (that tax is paid by the buyer on the change of ownership). If a professional helps you, a service fee may apply.

Can I record the sale online after handing over the vehicle?

Yes. As soon as Cerfa 15776 is signed and the carte grise is crossed out, you can record the sale online. We guide you through the required information so your position as seller is secured quickly.
