Deadlines and provisional certificate (CPI)

Once your file has been validated and processed, a provisional registration certificate (CPI) can be available very quickly — often as soon as the application is recorded. The final carte grise is then sent by secure post, usually within a few business days (often around 2 to 7 days depending on volume and postal delivery). Overall time depends mainly on how long it takes to assemble a complete file beforehand.

The CPI is a temporary document proving that your registration application has been recorded. It lets you drive while waiting for the final carte grise, within its validity period. Keep it in the vehicle with your insurance and licence. Once the final certificate arrives, the CPI is no longer needed.

A used-vehicle buyer has one month from the purchase date to apply for a certificate in their name. For a change of address, the deadline is also one month after moving. The seller must declare the sale within 15 days. These legal deadlines are separate from the printing and postal time once the file is submitted.

Yes, the CPI allows you to drive in France during its validity, provided you are insured and follow the highway code. Also carry ID and your licence. For travel abroad, check the destination country’s rules: a CPI is not always accepted outside France.

First check tracking and that your postal address is accurate and accessible (entry code, recipient name, and so on). If the usual delay is exceeded, contact us with your file number: we will check printing and shipping status. If the mail item is lost, a re-issue / duplicate procedure can be started.
